Things to Do Off Season in Old Orchard Beach, Maine

If you only know Old Orchard Beach in July, the off season can feel like a different town. Roughly November through April, the boardwalk slows down, the Pier gets quieter, and the beach opens up for long walks. This is my sourced local guide for when many seasonal stands are closed. Hours, events, and parking rules change in the off season, so please verify before you go. More context: Visiting and Restaurants.

Walk the seven-mile beach (and the Pier)

Old Orchard's shoreline is part of the continuous seven-mile beach from the Scarborough side through downtown and Ocean Park toward Ferry Beach and Camp Ellis (oobhomes beaches; Activities Guide of Maine). Dress for wind, watch tides, and use public access along Grand Avenue. Incoming water at brook and river crossings can cut you off (oobhomes beaches).

The Pier stays open to walk year-round. Most retail and food on the deck is closed November through April (oobhomes: The Pier).

Dog note (ordinance features only): From May 15 through Labor Day, dogs are not allowed on the beach 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and must be on a leash no longer than 12 feet from 5 p.m. to dusk. Outside that window, leash or voice-and-sight control, waste cleanup, and distance from posted nesting areas still apply (Town: Dogs in OOB).

Warm up downtown: spots that stay open

Downtown is quieter after Labor Day, but not empty, and free metered parking after Labor Day has supported off-season visits (Press Herald, Jan. 7, 2025). Sourced options (call ahead):

  • The Brunswick: Open daily at 11 a.m. (The Brunswick).
  • Joseph's by the Sea: Dinner Thu to Sat 4 to 8 p.m.; Sunday brunch 8 a.m. to noon; closed Mon to Wed on the current hours page (Joseph's). Check hours before you go.
  • Beach Bagels: Chamber / TrueOOB listing: open year round (TrueOOB).
  • Lisa's Pizza: Announced year-round for winter 2024 to 25; site lists weather-permitting hours (Press Herald, Jan. 7, 2025; Lisa's). Check hours before you go.
  • Jimmy The Greek's: Open daily at 11 a.m.; year-round entertainment noted on site (Jimmy The Greek's).
  • The Local OOB (23 Washington Ave.): Opened late Nov. 2025 as year-round; reported 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily (Press Herald, Dec. 10, 2025). Verify winter hours before you go.
  • Alouette Beach Cafe and Lazy Days: Chamber listings say year round (TrueOOB). Check hours before you go.

Do not count on: Ocean Perk (May to December, then winter hiatus) (Ocean Perk FAQs). Café 64 lists daily hours, but past seasons included mid-winter breaks, so verify before you go. Lone Pine's OOB location closed permanently in 2026 (Press Herald, Oct. 5, 2026).

Holiday lights at Veterans Memorial Park

Celebrate the Season by the Sea is the town's holiday gathering at Veterans Memorial Park (4 Heath St.).

The park is a year-round town green near First Street (oobhomes: Memorial Park).

Ocean Park: quieter sand and streets

Ocean Park, at the south end of town, stays calmer than the Pier district year-round. Founded in 1881, the historic Temple and cottage streets make a good slow walk when summer programming is paused (oobhomes: Ocean Park). Goosefare Brook interrupts the sand before Ferry Beach State Park (Activities Guide of Maine). Plan a downtown coffee stop if Ocean Perk is on hiatus.

Trails and parks

Eastern Trail (western OOB): Open year-round, typically sunrise to sunset, generally not plowed (Eastern Trail FAQ; conditions; oobhomes). Town brochure also notes snowshoeing/skiing on the OOB section (Town trail PDF).

Milliken Mills Woods: Nature walks and snowshoeing; parking noted at 192 Portland Ave. (Town trail PDF). Check conditions before you go.

Ferry Beach State Park (Saco, short drive south): Staffed Memorial Day to Sept. 30, 9:00 a.m. to sunset. Off season, park outside the gate and walk in; facilities closed. Leashed pets allowed on state park beaches Oct. 1 to March 31 (separate from OOB town beach rules) (Maine DACF).

Nearby short drives (not in OOB): Saco Heath Preserve: sunrise to sunset; boardwalk trail; foot traffic only, no pets (Nature Conservancy). Saco, Biddeford, and Portland (~20 minutes) add dining and indoor options when the seasonal strip is closed (oobhomes visiting).

What off-season life feels like if you own here

Summer is energy and full lots. Off season is quieter streets, easier beach access, a shorter restaurant list, holiday lights, and trail time without the boardwalk pace. Year-round owners lean on open restaurants, easier parking after Labor Day, and short drives for more options.

Can I walk Ferry Beach State Park in winter?
Yes, with limits: park outside the gate and walk in; facilities are closed (Maine DACF).

When is Celebration by the Sea / the tree lighting?
In 2025 it was December 6 at Veterans Memorial Park. A 2026 listing points to December 5. Verify with the Town or Chamber before you go.

Where should I park off season?
Recent winters treated metered parking as free after Labor Day (Press Herald, Jan. 7, 2025). Verify current meter rules before you park.
