What it is

A paved multi-use trail running through southern Maine. Part of the East Coast Greenway, the developing trail network from Maine to Florida. Used by walkers, runners, cyclists, and stroller traffic.

Where it runs through OOB

The OOB section runs through the western side of town, parallel to the rail corridor. Quiet, tree-lined, mostly flat, a comfortable family ride.

Connections

  • North, Scarborough Marsh and the Audubon Center, then continuing toward South Portland.
  • South, Saco and Biddeford, with the Kennebunkport extension in progress.

Access points in OOB

Multiple street-end trailheads through OOB. Smithwheel Road and the area near the Eastern Trail Alliance signage are the most common starting points for residents.

Bike rentals nearby

Seasonal bike rentals operate out of OOB and Saco, most year-round bike shops are in Saco/Biddeford. Confirm hours before driving down.

Trail conditions and seasonality

Paved sections are accessible year-round; in winter they are not always plowed. Some unpaved connector sections are seasonal, best ridden May through October.

Distance markers and key points

The most-used OOB-to-Scarborough Marsh round-trip is roughly 8, 10 miles, mostly flat. The Saco River bridge crossing southbound is the most scenic mile in the OOB section.
