The largest salt marsh in Maine. A protected ecosystem managed by the State of Maine in partnership with Maine Audubon.

Maine Audubon Center

Visitor center with naturalist-led walks, summer camps for kids, public programs, and exhibits. Open seasonally, typically late May through early September. Programs on maineaudubon.org.

Kayak and paddleboard rentals

Seasonal on-site rentals through Maine Audubon. Tide-aware launches; staff can guide you on the day's best route. Reservations recommended in July and August.

Birdwatching

Great egret, snowy egret, glossy ibis, several heron species, and raptors are all reliable sightings. Spring and fall migrations bring the widest diversity.

Eastern Trail access

The Eastern Trail runs along the marsh, one of the most scenic stretches of the entire trail. Walk or bike from the OOB segment north into the marsh in about 30 minutes.

How to get there from OOB

10 minutes north on Route 9 from downtown OOB. The Audubon Center is at 92 Pine Point Road, Scarborough.

Best times to visit

Early morning for bird activity and calm water. Golden hour for photography. Avoid mid-day in July, full sun and few shade options.

What to bring

  • Binoculars.
  • Sunscreen and a hat, there is no shade on the marsh.
  • Water.
  • Bug spray in June and July.
  • Quick-dry shoes for kayaking.
