Police, Fire, and EMS in Old Orchard Beach
Year-round full-time police and fire departments. Programs designed for OOB's mix of small-town residents and seasonal tourist surge.
Updated May 2026
Police Department
Year-round force scaled up for the summer surge. Notable programs include Good Morning OOB, a free daily check-in for elderly and isolated residents, and the Sgt. Vincent Mattia Memorial Scholarship for OOBHS graduates.
Fire Department
Year-round fire and EMS service. Deputy Chief Cliff Whitten was sworn in 2023.
Emergency Management
Active dune restoration program coordinated with the State and FEMA. The town's EMA office leads nor'easter and coastal flood response, including evacuation routing for low-lying neighborhoods like Surfside and parts of Pine Point.
Beach Patrol and Lifeguards
Lifeguards staff Kinney Shores and other public access points from late June through mid-August. Outside that window, the beach is unguarded.
Stormwater Management
OOB operates under the federal MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) program. Yard waste, fertilizer, and pet waste rules tie back to MS4 compliance.
Personal fireworks PROHIBITED
Consumer fireworks are prohibited in Old Orchard Beach. Civil violation: $100 to $2,500 plus attorney's fees. The town's professional displays (Thursday nights and July 4) are the only legal fireworks in OOB.
