Camp Ellis

The southernmost end of the seven-mile beach. Saco side. Working fishing community at the mouth of the Saco River.

Updated May 2026

Where it sits

Saco side. The southern terminus of the seven-mile beach, where the sand meets the mouth of the Saco River.

Character

A working fishing community. The vibe is closer to a Maine harbor village than a beach resort, lobster boats, fishing piers, and a tight year-round community.

Access

Camp Ellis Pier and the Saco public access points. Parking is limited in summer; arrive early.

Best for

Fishing, quieter beach days, and watching working boats run the river mouth.

Saco River fishing

Striped bass, mackerel, and bluefish are all reachable from the jetty in season. See fishing.

The 'Dummy' railroad history

The Old Orchard Beach Railroad, the "Dummy Line", connected OOB to Camp Ellis from 1880 until the early 1900s, hauling summer crowds south to the river. See Grand Trunk Railway history for the broader rail story.

Distance from OOB downtown

15 minutes by car heading south. About 7 miles down the beach on foot at low tide.
